India currently gives every salaried person a choice between two ways of paying income tax. The New Regime has lower tax rates but doesn't let you claim most deductions — no HRA, no 80C for PPF/ELSS/insurance, no home loan interest benefit. The Old Regime has higher tax rates but lets you reduce your taxable income first, through all those deductions, before tax is calculated.
So which one is better? It depends entirely on how much you actually invest and claim. If you don't invest much, claim no HRA, and have no home loan, the New Regime almost always wins — you get the lower rates with nothing to lose, plus a flat ₹75,000 standard deduction and a rebate that makes tax zero up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income.
If you're disciplined about your 80C investments (PPF, ELSS, life insurance — up to ₹1.5 lakh), pay rent and can claim HRA, or have a home loan, the Old Regime can come out ahead — sometimes by a lot. There's no universal answer; it's a math question specific to your numbers, which is exactly what a calculator is for.
One thing that trips people up: if you're salaried with no business income, you're not locked in— you can pick a different regime every single year when you file your return, based on how that year's investments and expenses shake out. There's no penalty for switching back and forth.
We compare both tax regimes side by side with your exact salary and deductions. No guesswork.
Most people leave money on the table. We scan your profile and flag exactly what you're not claiming.
